Chris McCandless

I recently read the book Into the Wild, about a young man named Chris McCandless. He ventured into Alaska with his back pack and his wits and survived off the land. He sadly passed away after eating wild potato roots that had developed a mold that he did not detect.

He never contacted his family through that time, and chose a life of solitude.
This story gave me pause.

Relationships and dynamics surely do tell the story of our lives. What we choose to do and not do with our own families. How much we own up to personal strenghts, faults, triumphs and failures.

Whatever he was seeking to find out there in Alaska, he must have felt was bigger than him.
A sense of peace, calm or just plain solitude from the American culture rat race that all of us seem to run the wheel of in some form... it must have been just that important to him.

In the one of that last things that he wrote, he said that having someone to share these experiences with was what it was really all about.
How true....

The Importance of Cubby Holes

I was making breakfast for Jiles this morning, when he came into the kitchen and said, "Mommy come and sit with me in my cubby hole." Of course, realizing that this was an invitation I might not get when he is a surly thirteen year old, I obliged. We read "Dalmatian book" played drums, and Made sure the toast and eggs didn't burn.
As he is getting older, I am realizing all of this independence that he know has is bittersweet. He doesn't even look like a baby anymore. He looks like a peach bursting at the seams. He is so full of life and wonder, snot rockets and curiosity, temper tantrums and sweet soft kisses.
I think that motherhood must be like and emotive zig zag, that makes you so elated for growth, yet longing for the time when....
I guess this is life, and I'm so proud of my little man, and that he gets to have one of his own.

The fun is about to.... be different

Well, Scott will be back to work in two days. Jiles and I have such a blast when he is home, and I will be a little bummed that he won't be able to hang out with us. Our weeks together have been full of fun with Jiles, and I love this family time that we get to spend.
This is also though the time that I go nuts on the house, painting and organizing, doing all of the stuff that I don't get to do while Scott is here. The house does stay a little neater though! I would like to set out on painting my dining room and living room this time. I think our room might be next after that. We'll see! Its been fun putting our new place together, but man, its hard not to get caught up in it. I think I need to pace myself!
